Message from the Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova, on the occasion of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development - May 21, 2011

All cultures and civilizations have contributed to the enrichment of humankind. Recognition of cultural diversity can accelerate mutual understanding, building a common and shared values.
 
For more than 20 years, UNESCO seeks to promote the importance of cultural diversity in shaping international development policies to be more effective and sustainable. The adoption of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) and the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005) represent important steps in recognition of this diversity. UN resolution on culture and development, adopted on 20 December 2010 by the UN General Assembly, indicating the contribution of culture and cultural diversity for sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
