Bali Meeting concludes with 19 new items on Intangible Heritage List
The 6th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage ended in Bali on November 29, 2011. The Bulgarian representative who participated in the Session was Prof. Mila Santova. During the week-long meeting, 11 items were added to the List of Intangible Heritage in Need of Urgent safeguarding, 19 others were inscribed on the Representative List and five Best safeguarding Practices were selected. Among these are Mariachi, string music, song and trumpet (Mexico), Fado, urban popular song of Portugal, Ceremonial Keşkek tradition (Turkey) and etc.
The Bulgarian items on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage are the following the ancient Bulgarian tradition “Nestinarstvo” and the authentic folklore group “Bistrishkite babi”.
The next meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible heritage will take place in Grenada in 2012.
The Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage was adopted by UNESCO’s General Conference in 2003. It has been ratified by 139 countries. Bulgaria has ratified the Convention on March 10, 2006.
